Meet the Designer of the Coco Cushion CAL: Tiam Safari

We’re so excited to be working with talented crochet designer Tiam Safari for this gorgeous Crochet-Along! Tiam has designed the pattern for the Coco Cushion, which is the perfect balance of beginner-friendly stitches combined with enough little touches to keep more experienced crocheters interested.

To celebrate, we caught up with Tiam for a little chat about life, the yarniverse and everything!

Hi! What are you up to today?
My day job involves developing cosmetics for beauty company, and as I work from home at the moment, I get to squeeze a few rows of knitting and crochet into my lunch break!

What inspired your design for this CAL?
I am really drawn to geometric tiles and wanted to create something that used traditional granny squares and also some granny rectangles. I also wanted it to be something that beginners could have a go at, or advanced crafters. Plus, I LOVE a tassel!

What is your favourite type of project to crochet?
I make and design a lot of garments, because I like the challenge of turning a piece of string into something that can cover and form to the body! I also love converting my knitwear designs into crochet, to make sure I’m making things that both sets of crafters can create.

Where’s your favourite place to crochet?
Either the sofa watching Netflix, or the car if I’m a passenger (I call it car-chet!) because I can keep my hands busy and make the most of the sitting time!

Which of your crochet projects are you proudest of?
I love my Unicorn Loopy Cardi – it’s a little bit crazy, but lots of fun to make and wear! Now I just need to make a waterproof one for our wet British weather!

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced with your crochet?
Necklines in pattern can be a bit of a head-scratcher. Something that works in one size (or you can kinda fake it til you make it) is sometimes really complicated in other sizes. I always try and keep this in mind when designing patterns, to save me and the Tech Editors a lot of headaches later!

What’s the best piece of crochet advice you’ve ever received?
There’s not point wasting good yarn in a project you hate. Just rip it back and start again!

Do you have any big crochet plans coming up?
I urgently need to do a major destash. It’s getting a little out of control, but I love all my yarn and can’t part with it! It’s time to start working on Christmas designs for me, and for Spring Summer 2022 designs for publications. It’s always go go go!
