What inspired your design for the Crochet Society?

There are many makers like me who are so busy making for others and don’t always make something for themselves.  I thought a scrubbies pack could be a nice self-care pamper creation that people could do for themselves.  When I first saw the yarn colours, I really felt it would be suited to a ‘pretty’ creation, so I went with a more floral look scrubbie, and double stranding the yarn worked out perfect for making a firm storage basket.

When did you learn to crochet, and why do you love it so much?

I learnt to crochet on YouTube (Bella Coco was one of the helpful YouTubers that got me started) just over four years ago.  I started when I became ill and I was struggling to find something to do other than sleep and watch tv.  I love crochet because it is a form of mindfulness for me – I can focus on creating something and being in the moment, rather than focusing on or worrying about the things I am unable to do due to my health.  Crochet has made the biggest difference to my mental wellbeing and helped me cope with the physical symptoms of my illness, yet it’s also the people I have met and the new friendships I have made in this Craft Community that has made such a positive difference in my life.

What is your favourite thing to make? Which colours do you love working with?

Blankets, blanket and more blankets!  too long between making blankets and I get withdrawal symptoms 😂.

I gravitate to bold colours, particularly rainbows and ombre colour combinations.  I normally don’t choose pastel colours, yet I do love variety so I’m happy to use most any colour.

What is your top tip for new crocheters?

Don’t compare your work to the work of others and feel disheartened – compare your work to your earlier creations.  That way you can focus on how much you have learnt and improved, rather than stressing about what you are not doing as well as others with more experience.

Any big crochet plans for next year?

I plan to make my first well overdue crochet garment, and I hope to be able to write up more patterns.  I would also love to try more yarns that I haven’t used before (once I can get my existing stash under control).

Where can people find out more about you?

You can keep with what I’m making on Instagram, and I can also be found on Ravelry, Etsy and Love Crochet.

Tell us something unexpected about you!

You wouldn’t be able to tell from my Instagram feed but I don’t actually have much rainbow or vibrant colours in my home or my wardrobe.  maybe that’s why I use it so much in my creations!
