Box 34 Designer – Alitzah Grant

Hi! What are you up to today?

Today is Sunday so after a morning of teaching Latin and English, I’m doing the usual chores of washing and changing the bedding – who doesn’t love a freshly changed bed? What inspired your design for this box? I love texture and the Alpine stitch is such a wonderfully tactile stitch. The colours are so clean and fresh and they reminded me of walking in the Alps in early spring, just as the snow starts to melt.

What is your favourite type of project to crochet?

My favourite has to be a project that is simple and repetitive like a familiar Granny Square blanket; something that lets your mind wander as you work but always brings you back to something satisfying and comforting.

Where’s your favourite place to crochet?

I will literally crochet anywhere and everywhere; on the tube, in my garden, in cafes and even whilst watching cricket at Lords. My favourite place is sitting on my bed listening to a good radio drama or watching an old black and white movie whilst drinking a good pot of tea.

Which of your crochet projects are you proudest of?

I would say it was my first, very wonky granny square that I made when I was 7, it was full of mistakes and the wool was practically threadbare from being worked, unpicked and worked again until I got the hang of it.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced with your crochet?

Being left-handed! I was told repeatedly that I was unteachable.

What’s the best piece of crochet advice you’ve ever received?

Don’t let anyone tell you that there is a right or wrong way to hold your hook! Also, don’t forget the turning chain.

How do you find quiet and calm?

I am very much part of the slow living movement, I find quiet and calm in simple things, in jobs – however humble- well done with pride and accuracy. Like a lot of makers, I find the process of making so relaxing and comforting and joyful. I also absolutely love a good list.Do you have any big crochet plans coming up? I have a few irons in the fire, so to speak; lots of new designs and collaborations but I am always up for a creative challenge. Where can people find out more about you?

I have two Instagram accounts; @alitzahgrant show cases my designs and collaborations and @ofblithespirit is more of a personal account. My patterns are available through Ravelry, LoveCrafts and Payhip.
