Here we chat to Crochet Society Box 21 designer, Jane Howarth (@janetarahowarth on Instagram)
What are you up to today?
I crocheted an impromptu cake this morning between video calls. The idea came to me while I was working on something totally unrelated, so I guess I’m missing working from cafes today!
What inspired your design for this box?
My design is really a functional variation on a plushie – the pattern was inspired by amigurumi. The secret plan is that your new bear friend will be too cute to leave at leave home, so you’ll never forget to bring your eco cup!
It’s been a tricky old time lately – have things changed much for you?
I’ve worked from home for years, so some aspects haven’t changed but I usually love getting out to find inspiration and reset between projects. This year I’ve been helping out with distance learning worksheets instead! Catching virtual events I couldn’t logistically attend in person has been an unexpected bonus though.
What is your favourite type of project to crochet?
I can never have enough scarves or cowls! And I can’t resist quick makes. It takes me forever to finish a bigger project because I stop for mini ones along the way.
Which of your crochet projects are you proudest of?
Every time an animal’s expression turns out with the right personality. The tiniest change can give them a totally different character, and since stitching is one of the last steps it’s on my mind the whole way through the project!
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced with your crochet?
Storing yarn is a constant challenge. Every time I think I’ve got it covered, I buy something new and need to re-strategise.
What’s the best piece of crochet advice you’ve ever received?
It’s actually a cross stitching tip I’ve carried over – try to keep the WS as neat as the RS, or as tidy as possible anyway. I’m a ‘do what works for you’ type of person, but this really helps! It’s an easy way to avoid tangles that can pull your work out of shape.
Where’s your favourite place to crochet?
Anywhere with tea and blankets. We keep crocheted blankets around the house in case anyone wants to cosy up.
Do you have any tips for little ways we can all help the planet as we crochet?
Try to organise spare materials after you’ve finished your project so you don’t waste anything. Even tiny strands can be so useful for details, so stash them away and give them a second chance!
Do you have any big crochet plans coming up?
I’m working on a really fun project right now, I can’t give out too many details yet but I can’t wait to share it!
