Here we chat to Crochet Society Box 20 designer, Ria Petals (@riapetals on Instagram)

Hi! What are you up to today?

I have created a little challenge for myself to help my creativity: Using a lucky dip, I pick out three balls of Ricorumi DK yarn and I can design an amigurumi piece with these balls only. It’s proving to be a fun and interesting project!

What inspired your design for this box?

As a university student, I only have limited space, so I wanted to create storage but make it cute.

This month is all about our crafty spaces – are you a tidy or a messy crafter?

I’m definitely a messy crafter, I tend to jump all over the place but there is no better feeling than tidying up after finishing a WIP.

What is your favourite type of project to crochet?

I am in love with making amigurumi as I just love how adorable they can be. Although they can be a little finicky, by the end you have a new friend.

Which of your crochet projects are you proudest of?

I think my Flower Boy patterns. They were my third ever amigurumi design and I’m surprised I was able to think up such a cute design.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced with your crochet?

Crochet block. Although crocheting makes me happy, sometimes it can be hard to either find time or the motivation to make. When you finally get your crojo (crochet mojo) back, it’s easy to see why I fell in love with crocheting and I become obsessed all over again!

What’s the best piece of crochet advice you’ve ever received?

If you’re unhappy with the something, re-do it – especially when it’s in the finishing of the piece. It can be upsetting to finish a piece and not be 100% happy with it. Take your time to fix it and make it perfect.

Where’s your favourite place to crochet?

Crochet is all about relaxation, so I love sitting on the sofa. I can stretch and spread my yarn out, but it is very likely that I’ll lose my hook at some point or another.

The nights are getting long here in the UK now – what do you do to bring in a little light and happiness?

Pop on a cosy robe and settle over a cup of tea or hot chocolate- whichever takes your fancy. There’s no problem that can’t be solved with a hot drink.

Do you have any big crochet plans coming up?

I’m hoping to release a whole bunch of patterns soon, so I am super excited to be making all kinds of new things for you all. I hope you love them.
