Meet Kat - Designer of the 'Feels Like Christmas Morning' Tree Skirt

Kat Witherall (@lunacrochetdesigns) is the brains behind our fantastic tree skirt! She has been crocheting from a young age and started designing patterns in 2020. Her passion lies in creating beautiful crochet designs for all skill levels.

When did you start crocheting?

My grandma was an arts and crafts teacher and when my mum was at work, she would look after her grandchildren and taught us all to knit, crochet and do other various craft activities. That is why I can't remember learning to crochet, it seems like I always knew how to do it, I was too young to remember the learning process. When I got older, I had a bit of a break from crocheting but picked my hook up again in 2019 and have not put it down since.

Who or what inspired you to crochet?

My grandma who taught me to crochet, my sister who wouldn't make me a crocheted snowflake in 2019 and told me to do it myself and my mother in-law who gave me some of her crochet hooks and yarn to re-start my crochet journey. My sister was also the one who encouraged me to start designing my own crochet patterns.

What do you enjoy the most about crochet?

There are so many possibilities when it comes to crochet, so many different stitch combinations and styles and you can really use your creativity, there is always something new to learn and try.

Also, it is a very portable hobby, because all you need is a hook and bit of yarn. But I think my favourite thing is that it doesn't take me away from my family into another area of the house, we can all sit together and watch TV and I can still crochet.

What was your biggest inspiration when creating the tree skirt?

I love Christmas Morning when there are lots of presents under the tree and I thought how nice it would be for kids if their Christmas tree had a skirt with lots of present boxes all around and they can imagine it being filled with real presents on Christmas morning.

How long did it take you from “idea in your head” to “finished piece in your hands”?

This project worked up surprisingly quickly, I had a very clear idea of what I was trying to achieve and after some swatching, it all came together in a couple of weeks!

What do you love the most about Christmas?

I love the buildup to Christmas, the decorations going up and Christmas songs being played everywhere. My favourite day is Christmas Eve, because for us it is filled with family traditions of games, lovely food and little gifts!

What’s your go-to Christmas movie/song, while you crochet?

My favourite Christmas movie is Elf, I re-watch it every december! As for the songs, I love to listen to so many of them and do not have a favourite.

Do you have a top-tip for crocheters who want to give your festive project a try?

You are only ever working with two colours, so it is a lovely make for anyone to try, however, you may still end up in a tangle if not careful, so do check your yarn and untangle it before it gets too messy! Also, don't be afraid to play with colours, we all have our own Christmas/house decor and it would be great to see this skirt in lots of different colour combinations!

We'd like to thank Kat for the amazing tree skirt pattern design, which is exclusively available in our 2025 Advent Calendar!
