START CROCHETING

With A, chain 30.

Row 1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, dc across, changing to B in last st. Turn. 29 sts

Row 2: 1 ch, *1 dc, 1 htr, 5 tr, 1 htr, 1 dc**, 1 ch, miss 1 st; rep from * to end, ending last rep at **.

Row 3: As Row 2, changing to A in last st. Turn.

Row 4: 1 ch, *9 dc, 1 tr in missed st two rows below; rep from * to end, omitting last tr. Turn.

Row 5: 1 ch, dc across, changing to B in last st. Turn.

Row 6: 3 ch (counts as a st), 1 tr, 1 htr, 1 dc, <1 ch, miss 1 st, 1 dc, 1 htr, 5 tr, 1 htr, 1 dc> twice, 1 ch, miss 1 st, 1 dc, 1 htr, 2 tr. Turn.

Row 7: As Row 6, changing to A in last st. Turn.

Row 8: 1 ch, 4 dc, 1 tr in missed st two rows below, <9 dc, 1 tr in missed st two rows below> twice, 4 dc. Turn.

Row 9: As Row 5. Then, rep rows 2-9 four times. Afterwards, rep rows 2-5 once, do not change to B or turn at end of Row 5. Fasten off B but not A. There will be 11 rows of grey “almonds”

Edging

When working in row ends, place 1 dc in each dc row end and 2 dc in each tr row end. Crochet over the colour changes as you go.

Row 1: Continuing with A, 1 ch, *turn work 90 degrees clockwise to work along next edge, dc across edge to corner, <1 dc, 1 ch, 1 dc> in corner st; rep from * to top edge, 5 sl st, 1 ch, dc across to last 5 sts, leave last 5 sts unworked. Turn. The number of sts between the sl sts and the unworked sts corresponds to the length of the handle slots, adjust as necessary and work only over these sts in the following rows.

Rows 2-5: *1 ch, 19 dc across top edge. Turn. 19 sts

Then, fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. After, attach A to 6th st of bottom row (or st required to match opposite end). Rep rows 2-5, then Row 2 once more. Fasten off. Then feed the end sections through the handles, fold the ends down to the inside and sew along to secure the handles in place. Finally, fold piece in half, WS facing. Join A to top of one side, working through one inner loop of each side, sl st sides together. Fasten off. Rep on other side. Weave in ends.

Lining

Place lining, right side up, on top of interfacing (if using) and fold RS together. Pin together up the sides. Place the bag on top, with the bottom of the bag on the fold of the fabric. With a pen, mark where the side seams will go. Go over the pen mark with a ruler to straighten. Machine-sew up the sides. Press. Measure the depth of the bag and fold down the hem to correspond, press flat. Insert lining into bag, pin in place and neatly hand stitch the top of lining to bag.
