Free Crochet Beanie Pattern

Tools and materials
About the yarn 4-ply; 400m per 100g; 100% acrylic 28g cream (MC) 3g each blue (CC1), yellow (CC2), pink (CC3), green (CC4)
Tension 24 sts x 16 rows = 10cm measured over dc in BLO with smaller hook.15 sts x 8 rows = 10cm measured over Granny Stripe pattern with smaller hook
Hooks used 4mm, 4.5mm
Other supplies stitch marker, tapestry needle, small pompom maker
Sizing S (M). Finished circumference: 45 (48) cm. Finished height: 23cm, excluding pompom Pictured in medium
Start crocheting
This hat is worked from the brim up to the crown. The brim is worked in rows and is joined to work in the round before the main body of the hat is started by working along one edge of the brim.
Brim With MC and smaller hook, chain 9.
Row 1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, dc in BLO across. Turn. 8 sts
Row 2: 1 ch, dc in BLO across. Turn. Rep Row 2 until work measures 45 (48) cm, about 71 (77) rows. Join last row to first row by working through both layers, 8 dc in BLO. 72 (78) rows If you changed the number of rows, note that the row count needs to be divisible by 3.
Hat
Rotate Brim to work around one edge of work. Change to larger hook.
Rnd 1: 1 ch, 1 dc in each row end around Brim edge, join with sl st in first dc. 72 (78) sts
Rnd 2: 3 ch (counts as 1 tr here and throughout), 2 tr in first st, 1 ch, miss 2 sts, *3 tr, 1 ch, miss 2 sts; rep from * to end, join with sl st in top of beg 3 ch. 72 (78) sts
Rnd 3: 3 ch, 2 tr in ch-sp just behind join, 1 ch, *3 tr in next 1ch-sp, 1 ch; rep from * to end, join with sl st in top of beg 3 ch. Rnd 3 forms Granny Stripe pattern. Change to CC1.
Rnd 4: As Rnd 3. Change to MC.
Rnd 5: As Rnd 3. Change to CC2.
Rnd 6: As Rnd 3. Change to MC.
Rnd 7: As Rnd 3. Change to CC3.
Rnd 8: As Rnd 3. Change to MC.
Rnd 9: As Rnd 3. Change to CC4.
Rnd 10: As Rnd 3. Change to MC.
Rnds 11–13: As Rnd 3.
Crown shaping
Rnd 14: 3 ch, 1 tr in ch-sp just behind join, 1 ch, *2 tr in next 1ch-sp, 1 ch; rep from * to end, join with sl st in top of 3 ch. 48 (52) sts
Rnd 15: 4 ch (counts at 1 tr and 1 ch), [1 tr in next 1ch-sp, 1 ch] to end, join with sl st in 3rd of beg 4 ch. 24 (26) sts Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing up.
Making up With tapestry needle and yarn tail, thread a running stitch through the top of sts on Rnd 15, and pull to close. Sew securely. With remaining yarn and small pompom maker, make a pompom and sew to top of hat. Weave in ends. The brim is stretchy and fits snug and comfortable to the head, and the body of the hat has a slouchy fit, pulled down by the pompom.
