Start crocheting

Stretch your skills with a slightly unusual stitch pattern that requires you to cross back on yourself as you work, so make sure to read the pattern instructions carefully. The hat is crocheted from the brim up and is worked in the round. When finished you should be able to see a ‘seam’ where the beginning of the round was, this should be the back of the hat. With CC, chain 68 (76). Join to work in the rnd, being careful not to twist.

Rnd 1: 1 ch (counts as dc) dc around, join with sl st to 1 ch. 68 (76) sts Break MC, change to CC.

Rnd 2: 3 ch (doesn’t count at tr here and throughout), miss 1 dc, 4 tr in next, *miss 3 dc, 4 tr in next st; rep from * until 3 dc rem, sl st into top of 3 ch. 68 (76) tr

Rnd 3: 3 ch, *miss 3 tr, 1 tr in next, 2ch, 1 tr back into first skipped st; rep from * to end, sl st into top of 3 ch.

Rnd 4: 3 ch, *4 tr in next 2 ch-sp; rep from * to end, sl st in top of 3 ch.

Rnd 5: As Rnd 3. Rnds 4-5 form Crossover pattern.

Rnds 6-7: As rnds 4-5. Break CC, change to MC.

Rnds 8-9: As rnds 4-5.

Decrease rnds

Rnd 10: 3 ch, *2 tr in next 2 ch-sp, 4 tr in next 2 ch-sp; rep from * to last 2 ch-sp, 2 (4) tr in next 2 ch-sp, join with sl st to top of 3 ch. 52 (56) tr

Rnd 11: As Rnd 3.

Rnd 12: 3 ch, *4 tr in next 2 ch-sp, 2 tr in next 2 ch-sp; rep from * to last two 1 (2) ch-sp.

SIZE S/M ONLY: 4 tr in next ch-sp, join with sl st to top of 3 ch. 40 tr

SIZE M/L ONLY: <2 tr in next ch-sp> twice, join with sl st to top of 3 ch. 40 tr

ALL SIZES:

Rnd 13: As Rnd 3.

Rnd 14: 3 ch, *2 tr in next 2 ch-sp; rep from * to end, join with sl st to top of 3 ch. Fasten off and leave long tail end.

Making up

With tapestry needle thread though the top of each tr st on last rnd, pull tight close, fasten off and weave in end. Using pompom making and holding colours double, make a large pompom and attach to the top of the hat. Place a st marker at regular intervals of 10 in your foundation chain so you don’t need to worry about losing count

Crossover Stitch

Step 1: 4 tr in first st, *miss 3 st, 4 tr in next st; repeat from * until end as directed in the pattern.

Step 2: 3 ch, miss 3 sts, tr in next, 2ch as directed in rnd 2.

Step 3: Still working in rnd 2, tr back into first skipped st. Repeat until end as directed.

Step 4: 3 ch, 4 tr in each 2 ch-sp across, tr in top of 3 ch. Turn. Steps 2-4 show the Crossover stitch used in the pattern.
