Box 5 designer – Emma Varnam
We are delighted that @EmmavarnamUK has designed a pattern for Box 5 of the Crochet Society. Do head over to her Instagram to have a good look at the kind of fun patterns she likes to design. Remember the content of the box are a complete surprise apart from which designers will be included!
When did you learn to crochet, and how did that turn into designing your own patterns?
Probably 10 years ago and I was already designing knitting patterns and so I naturally started experimenting with designs.
What is your favourite thing to make?
Toys I think – I love to see the joy on peoples faces and an immediate hug – but then the Cacti and Succulents was such a brilliant book to write and I have had so many messages from people who have loved making them.
Which colours do you love working with?
Pinks and Blues for me – I do love a stripe.
Which other designers do you admire?
From Knitting Debbie Bliss and Kim Hargreaves, in crochet there are too many to count. I love Lucy – Attic 24 and Jane Crowfoot – but they are pals of mine – also Doerthe from Frau Apfelkern
How many WIPs do you have?
2…. is that shocking? I’m a bit obsessed about finishing.
Where is your favourite place to crochet?
The chair in bay of the sitting room window – or in our bed early Sunday morning with hot black coffee and our cat, Stanley on my knee.
Who do you like to make crochet gifts for?
Children – they totally get the whimsy of it – they tend to understand the love of making – adults often eye up your hard work for regifting…..
What piece of advice would you give to a new crocheter?
Make things that you adore – but are not too big. You will have the motivation and the persistence to finish them and then get on to your new project.
What are your crochet plans for the rest of the year?
Taking a bit of a break from commissions – I love making my own garments and have a few ideas in my head.
Where can people find out more about you?
You can pop over to my blog www.emmavarnam.org.uk – that is where I talk most about my design process. I would also say that often people don’t read the blurb in crochet books – you would be surprised by how much humour, tips and trick are in the text. Since writing my own books I now spend more time reading these sections – they are usually treasure troves of information.
Tell us something unexpected about you!
I really love to dance and do have some quite spectacular signature moves – if you know me well – you know.
You can find all the designers for Box 5 here – Box 5 Designers. If you would like to purchase this box (box closes for subscribers 20th October), or buy previous boxes head over to our Shop – Crochet Society Shop
