Crochet Society Box 23 Designer – Kylie Moleta

Hi! What are you up to today?

I’m working on a new throw blanket design for Crochet Now

What are your thoughts about crafting and mental wellbeing?

I started crocheting 5 years ago when I became chronically ill and couldn’t do most of the things I used to be able to do.  I often say that crochet saved my life, and while it may sound dramatic it really did help because I was no longer feeling as depressed.  It stopped me from focusing on all the things I couldn’t do, and I was now focussing on something that I could do.  And I also had something productive and creative to show for my day.

What is your favourite type of project to crochet?

I am obsessed with making blankets!  I love to break it up by making other bits and pieces, but I always go straight back to blankets.

Where’s your favourite place to crochet?

At home on the couch where I can be most comfortable and have everything, I need close by.

Which of your crochet projects are you proudest of?

One of the projects I’m most proud of is the first pattern I was ever commissioned to make, which was the Morelia Scrubbies and basket from Box 7.  I was very nervous doing this for the first time but I’m proud that I pushed through and did it regardless because it gave me the confidence to back myself and put myself forward for more commissions.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced with your crochet?

Sometimes I struggle with brain fog and it can be hard to have the energy to write up my patterns. I just try not to over do it, I get as much done as I can when I’m feeling well enough, and I check everything multiple times.  But I’m lucky to have lots of talented people to check over my work so I try not to stress too much (although I do hate making mistakes).

What’s the best piece of crochet advice you’ve ever received?

Try not to compare yourself to other crocheters, rather compare yourself now to your earlier creations and see how far you have come.

It’s been a difficult year for many of us – do you have any words of encouragement for any crocheters out there who are having a hard time?

Don’t be too hard on yourself if you are struggling, you are certainly not alone, and don’t be too afraid to ask for help.

Do you have any big crochet plans coming up?

I’m excited to have a couple of new designs that will be published soon, as well as a couple more that I’ll be working on over the next few months.
