Crochet Society Box 22 – Beardie and Blondie

Hi! What are you up to today?

If it’s a weekday then we’re both working our full-time jobs! We both work in tech when we’re not busy crocheting. Jordon (Blondie) works as a technical consultant for a computer vision company. Mike (Beardie) is the team lead of a software development team. If it’s a weekend then we’ll be up to one of our overwhelming number of hobbies!

This month we’re looking to the stars – what’s your star sign and do you think it’s reflected in your crochet?

Our star signs are Scorpio (Jordon) and Taurus (Mike). Although if we use the new version with 13 signs Jordon changes to Libra! We are not big believers in horoscopes, so the biggest way that star signs have played into our crochet is as a project where we are working to design a doll for each star sign. It has been lots of fun trying to come up with a single doll to represent each sign!

What is your favourite type of project to crochet?

Our favourite type of project is probably one that includes a new yarn or stitch. We love exploring new ideas and trying stuff for the first time! Any excuse to buy some new yarn is always much appreciated.

Where’s your favourite place to crochet?

We have a whole room in the house dedicated to storing yarn and our other hobbies. It’s super cosy and the aim was to keep everything crochet in there. It seemed like a fool proof plan, but somehow a little crochet den has popped up in almost every room in the house! Our favourite place to crochet is where the other person is. If Beardie is cooking dinner then Blondie can probably be found crocheting in the kitchen!

Which of your crochet projects are you proudest of?

The projects we’re proudest of often aren’t our best designs or our biggest pieces. We love making personalised gifts for family and each other. Whether it be a crochet-ified character from a game or a childhood memory, we love these heartfelt crochets! Other than that, the project we our proudest of would probably be our original Rainbow Chunko design as he holds a special place in our hearts even if he wasn’t a work of art!

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced with your crochet?

The biggest challenge we face is definitely finding time for crochet. We absolutely adore crochet and it is definitely Blondie’s favourite hobby. But with full time jobs and responsibilities it can be tough to find the time needed. It’s also easy to fall out of touch with crochet. Luckily it doesn’t matter how long you leave a WIP, you can always come back to it!

What’s the best piece of crochet advice you’ve ever received?

To crochet what you love! We have struggled many times with this idea as well. It’s super easy to fall into crocheting whatever the current trend is, or things you think will be popular. We find it easy to fall into a slump with crochet, especially if we make many of the same doll again and again. When you’re crocheting an idea you’re really happy with it’s just so much more fun!

What would you say to any crocheters out there who are having a hard time?

Hold in there! We have all been struggling with lockdowns and yarn shortages and so many other more personal issues. It’s been a hard year all round, but hopefully things will start clearing up soon. Motivation has been hard for us and many others during these tough times but make sure not to beat yourself up over it. Sometimes we feel guilty for not spending enough time on our hobbies but we all have to cut ourselves some slack. We’re all in this together and hopefully crochet can give you a little bit of peace in these difficult times!

Do you have any big crochet plans coming up?

Our crochet plans are actually very small at the moment! We have fallen in love with simpler, smaller pieces and our house is slowly filling up with new little friends. We can’t wait for them to meet everyone!
